Stu picked up his scotch and took a small sip. “I don’t know what I want. Other than you.”

A stunned look came over her face. “Have you gone bloody bonkers?” Her expression slowly changed into something a little more radiant.

“I need you, Paige. You are the only person who’s helped me through the past few months. You’re the only woman that understands me.”

“Right. Look, Stuart. I’m not interested in being with somebody just because I know how to lick their wounds.”

“It’s not that. Look, every time we’ve gone to the pub and you’ve introduced me to somebody, I’ve never been interested for a number of reasons. Mainly because they’ve always been a distraction. I just want to spend time with you, not the girl you’re trying to set me up with. You want to know why another reason why I’m sitting around watching TV and drinking?”

“That is?”

“I loved a woman who left me and took my son away. I also have another who’s not remotely interested in me and always tries to pawn me off on her friends.”

She reached forward and took Stu’s scotch out of his hands and set it down far out of his reach. “Are you saying you love me?”

For the first time that night, he didn’t look at his drink. He looked directly into Paige’s warm, brown eyes. “Yes.”

She stood, rounded the table, and took her hand in hers. “Come on, then.”
